I've been discussing systems training with a local organization and did some desk research to assess my previous choices in helping organizations implement new tech. The thought leader who gets it right, and is my favourite in the space, is Cathy Moore. Her approach is grounded in solid learning science, yet cuts the academic fat off, giving learning and development teams actionable, relatable tips to create meaningful training designs. I re-read Moore's piece on software (systems) training and still find her advice bang on: 1) Articulate the business goal that the new software/system will solve 2) Define the tasks the systems and software that users need to perform and 3) Provide implementation materials and aids that are foolproof. In the past, I've also added experiences that leverage peer knowledge like weekly office hours for Q&A sessions and problem-solving, and assigning ambassadors to champion the software and share their subject-matter expertise. *Learning Design* Session #T4S3 It was an interactive “Support Group Panel” format beautifully chaired by Andrew Jacobs Panelists were Julie Dirksen Cammy Bean and Jane Bozarth. Session was kickstarted with a discussion by participants (in 2s)about what your job role is and what you really do. The summary showed a common theme… Instructional designers actually fit into roles outside of their job descriptions. My takeaways 1. I am facilitating the local Toronto meeting for the 𝗖𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗦𝘁𝘂𝗱𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗘𝗱𝘂𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 & 𝗧𝗲𝗰𝗵𝗻𝗼𝗹𝗼𝗴𝘆 and would love for you to participate and share widely with your networks! Researchers from around the world will run local academic meetings around the common theme: ‘Problematising education and digital technology’. All these events will take place during the same week (between February 17th and 21st, week 8 of 2025). Our meeting will be online and scheduled to to best fit participants.   𝗙𝗼𝗿𝗺𝗮𝘁 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗣𝘂𝗿𝗽𝗼𝘀𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗠𝗲𝗲𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴𝘀: The specific nature and form of these meetings is flexible. The aim is for people to get together in ways that *do not* involve excessive cost, unnecessary travel and unsociable timings. These meetings will all be based around four common themes, addressed in the form of the following questions: 1. What are the pressing issues, concerns, tensions and problems that surround EdTech in our locality? What questions do we need to ask, and what approaches will help us research these questions? 2. What social harms are we seeing associated with digital technology and education in our locality? 3. What does the political economy of EdTech look like in our region? What do local EdTech markets look like? How are global Big Tech corporations manifest in local education systems? What does EdTech policy look like, and which actors are driving policymaking? What do we find if we ‘follow the money’? 4. What grounds for hope are there? Can we point to local instances of digital technology leading to genuine social benefits and empowerment? What local push-back and resistance against egregious forms of EdTech is evident? What alternate imaginaries are being circulated about education and digital futures? 𝗠𝗲𝗲𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 Outcomes: Participants will co-produce a brief summary around the four common headline questions. These summaries will be collated, and an open-access report will be produced from this material. We hope that various groups and collectives will come together in different cities and regions – drawing in researchers from multiple universities as well as independent/non-affiliated scholars residing in the region. We hope these sessions will establish a loose network of groups that can begin to make lasting connections and develop a sense of intellectual community. I made a poster presentation on Friday at the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) Conference in Banff. I got some great feedback. The starting point of my research is values-based: I want NorQuest students to be academically successful. But, I was reminded that institutions often look for other things like retention and graduation rates that are directly related to money, reputation, and branding. I had run my research as a Community Service Learning Project for which badges were given. Badges are great for resumes but they might not appear on transcripts. It might be better to run them as co-curricular records so that they are on transcripts, as well. This should add to the buy-in from students. It was a great reminder that I have three audiences with my research: students, the institution, and SoTL. Also, someone at the Research and Innovation (RAI) Department at NorQuest saw my presentation and are interested in following up to possibly expand my research across the entire college and not be limited to my faculty. Awesome!
